A new biomass torrefaction facility, set to be developed by Carbona in the Central North Island, will produce 180,000 tonnes of torrefied biomass annually, accelerating New Zealand’s transition from coal to renewable energy.  The project is backed by a diverse ownership structure, including local Iwi, wood processing businesses, and international investors, ensuring strong local and global support.

Carbona has partnered with Austrian technology providers Polytechnik and Andritz, who recently commissioned a 60,000-tonne-per-year torrefaction facility at the Joensuu Biocoal plant in Finland.  Beyond domestic applications, the facility also unlocks global export opportunities.
